Planning for Oil
¬Ý
Oil production on this boutique scale has to aim for quality. That involves selecting and caring for your plants, harvesting at the correct time, distilling carefully, and bottling and storing your oil correctly for optimal oil.

Planning for U-Pick
¬Ý
All the lavender farmers we have talked to come back to one thing: U-Pick is the backbone of your lavender farm. Oil production is glamorous but not that profitable.
¬Ý
So we’Äôve been planning for our U-Pick customers. This involves thinking about:
¬ÝAccess
¬ÝParking
¬ÝStaffing
¬ÝRefreshments
¬ÝProviding shade and picnic tables
¬ÝSigns
¬ÝHours of Operation
¬ÝAdvertising/Marketing

Lavender has hundreds of varieties. Its wonderful stuff, and great to have so much choice, but now I feel like a kid in a candy store, and I can’Äôt make up my mind which ones to choose!

Preparation, Preparation, Preparation
¬Ý
Jadyne Reichner at Purple Haze Lavender in Sequim advised that discing and tilling three times the year before planting should be enough to get the worst of the annual weeds under control.
So, with our new John Deere 3320 tractor, we begun the process in August 2005.
Unfortunately, after discing our field three times and still having a full complement of weeds, we’Äôve decided to use weed cloth. i think a lot of the problem is the wind that hits us also brings a lot of weed seeds from neighbors,

Starting a Lavender Farm: The Problems
¬Ý
Weeds: They are our number one problem!
¬Ý
Our number two problem is moles (and gophers). We’Äôve had to resort to trapping them, since our plan of relocating them to mole club med in our back forty has not panned out. Lucky Theo has the trapping job, one that he takes quite seriously!
